If your camera doesn't work on Windows
- Allow camera access. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and Let desktop apps access your camera. Make sure your browser is allowed.
- Check the privacy shutter and camera key. Many laptops have a sliding cover over the lens or a camera key (often F8 or F10) with a camera icon that turns the camera off.
- Close other apps. Only one app can use the camera on some PCs. Quit Zoom, Teams, Skype and the Windows Camera app, then reload this page.
- Pick the right camera. Laptops with an IR face-unlock camera show two cameras. Choose the one that is not called IR in the camera list here.
- Update or reinstall the driver. Right-click Start > Device Manager > Cameras. Right-click your camera and choose Update driver, or Uninstall device and restart to reinstall it.
- Try the Windows Camera app. Search for Camera in the Start menu. If it shows a black screen too, the problem is the camera or driver, not your browser.

Camera questions
How do I test my camera on Windows 11?
Open this page and press Turn camera on. Allow access when your browser asks. You will see your picture, the camera name, resolution and frame rate. You can also open the built-in Camera app from the Start menu.
Why is my laptop camera not working on Windows?
The most common causes are camera privacy settings, a closed lens shutter, a camera key that turned it off, or another app holding the camera. Work through the steps on this page in order.
Why does my webcam show a black screen?
A black picture usually means the privacy shutter is closed, the wrong camera is selected (often the IR camera), or the driver needs reinstalling.
How do I change the default camera on Windows?
Windows has no single default camera. Each app, including Zoom, Teams and your browser, has its own camera setting. On this page, use the Camera list to switch.
