Mic test: check your microphone in seconds

Talk and watch the level, then record yourself and listen back. Find out if people will hear you clearly before your call.

How to test your microphone

  1. Press Test my microphone. Allow microphone access when the browser asks.
  2. Talk at your normal volume. The bar should reach the green-to-yellow area. The wave moves when you speak.
  3. Record 5 seconds and play back. Listen for hiss, hum, echo or a muffled voice. Use headphones to hear it clearly.
  4. Try the processing switches. Turn off noise suppression to hear what your raw mic picks up, which is what some apps send.

Microphone not working? Try these fixes

  • Check the mute switch. Many headsets and laptops have a hardware mute button or key with a light.
  • Pick the right mic. If you have a headset and a laptop, choose the one you will use in the Microphone list.
  • Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, then turn on access. Check Settings > System > Sound > Input for the volume.
  • Mac: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, then turn on your browser. Check Sound > Input for the level.
  • iPhone and Android: Allow the microphone for your browser in the phone's settings, and remove any case that covers the mic hole.
  • Another app has it. Quit Zoom, Teams, Discord or other call apps and try again.

Mic test questions

How do I test my microphone online?

Press Test my microphone, allow access, and speak. If the bar and the wave move, your mic works. Press Record 5 seconds and play back to hear how you sound.

Why is my microphone not picking up sound?

The mic may be muted, the wrong mic may be selected, or the browser or system may block it. Check the hardware mute, choose the right microphone here, and allow access in your system privacy settings.

How do I know if my mic is too quiet?

If the result says Quiet when you talk normally, move closer to the mic or raise its input volume in your system sound settings.

Does this mic test record or upload my voice?

No. Sound is analyzed in your browser. The 5-second recording stays on your device and disappears when you close the page.

Why does my mic sound different in Zoom or Teams?

Call apps add their own noise suppression and echo cancellation. Turn those switches on and off here to hear the difference.
